Our Tile Identification & Sourcing Consultation is a research service designed to help identify a vintage or historic tile and, when possible, locate the tile or a suitable replacement for your restoration project.

Because every vintage tile is unique and identifying older tile can require careful research, we ask that you provide as much detail as possible. This information should help us narrow down the tile's age, manufacturer, style, size, and potential sources. Please monitor your email, as we may follow up with questions during the research process and will keep you informed of what we find.

What does the service include?

Vintage Tile Shop will research one unique tile design, using the information, photographs, and/or physical tile samples that you provide. When appropriate, this may include:

• Reviewing your tile's size, appearance, markings, and other identifying characteristics
• Researching possible manufacturers, patterns, styles, and dates
• Reviewing a physical tile sample if you are able to mail one to us
• Searching Vintage Tile Shop's inventory and other appropriate sources for a possible match, including online marketplaces and retailers
• Identifying possible replacement or matching options or other resources when an exact match cannot be located

Our goal is to take your tile from “What is this?” to “Where can I find it?” whenever the available information allows. We hope to identify your tile and provide information on where to source it.

Before you purchase, please be prepared to provide as much information about your tile as possible, including:

• Exact tile dimensions, including thickness
• Color, finish, pattern, and other appearance details
• Approximate age of the tile, home, or renovation
• Location where the tile is installed
• Any markings, numbers, or manufacturer's information on the back
• Clear photographs of the tile, including the face, edge, and back when accessible
• The approximate amount of tile you are looking for

We will contact you via email after you purchase the service so you can provide us with this information.

One tile design per consultation

The $80 consultation covers the identification and sourcing research for one unique tile, pattern, or design. You may provide multiple photographs of the same tile or installation and, if requested, mail us a physical sample.

If your project includes different tile designs—for example, a floor tile and a separate wall tile, or a tile and a distinct trim or accent piece—each unique design may require its own consultation.

Mosaic floors can sometimes be made from a single repeating mosaic pattern or from multiple individual tile designs arranged into a pattern. We'll review the information you provide and determine what needs to be identified on a case-by-case basis. If additional identification work is needed, we'll let you know before proceeding with additional research.

If you need help identifying a second, different tile design, please purchase a separate consultation.

What happens after I purchase?

Once we receive your order, we will email you to collect information about your tile. Please provide as much accurate information as possible and as many photos as possible—the more we know about your tile, the better we can narrow down the possibilities. Once we receive your information and photos, Vintage Tile Shop will review it and begin the research process. If you can provide a physical sample, we will send you instructions for mailing it to us. 

Based on our experience, a typical tile identification request can require 2–3 hours of research and communication, often spread across multiple emails. Please provide an active email address so the process can move along smoothly for both of us!

Please note: Vintage tiles can be difficult to identify, and we can't always guarantee an exact identification or replacement. The consultation fee covers the research time and resources involved in investigating your tile, not a guarantee of an exact match.
