About Our Tile

What is deadstock tile?

Deadstock tile, also known as new old stock, refers to tile that was manufactured decades ago but has never been used or installed. These tiles were often part of overstock inventory from tile shops or manufacturers and have been preserved in storage.

At Vintage Tile Shop, all deadstock tile is original, unused, and carefully inspected to ensure it meets our quality standards for resale and installation.

What is the difference between salvaged and new old stock?

Salvaged tile has been previously installed and then removed from a space, which can result in wear, damage, or adhesive residue.

New old stock tile, on the other hand, has never been installed. It remains in its original condition, offering the character of vintage materials with the usability of new tile.

Vintage Tile Shop specializes exclusively in new old stock tile.

Why choose vintage tile over new tile?

Vintage tile offers qualities that are difficult to find in modern production, both in craftsmanship and character.

Many vintage tiles were made using methods and materials that prioritized durability, resulting in pieces that have already stood the test of time. Their colors, glazes, and textures often have a depth and richness that is rarely replicated today, giving spaces a distinctive, timeless look.

Choosing vintage tile also supports sustainability by using existing materials rather than contributing to new manufacturing demand or landfill waste. Each piece is a form of preservation, keeping high-quality materials in circulation and out of disposal streams.

For restoration projects in particular, vintage tile allows homeowners and designers to maintain the architectural integrity of a space, helping match the original era, style, and intent of the home. For new designs, it offers a way to introduce history, texture, and individuality that cannot be mass-produced.

Finding the Right Tile for Your Project

Can you help me match tile for a repair or renovation?

Yes — we can assist with tile matching, but detailed information is required.

Due to the wide variation in manufacturers, colors, and sizes over several decades, general descriptions (such as “brown tile”) are not enough to identify a match.

Please include:

  • Manufacturer (often stamped on the back)
  • Exact size, including thickness
  • Clear photos of the tile, front and back
  • Quantity needed

Providing detailed information allows us to better assess potential matches and guide your next steps.

Can vintage wall tile be used on floors?

In most cases, vintage wall tile is not suitable for floor use. Wall tiles are typically not rated to withstand the weight, impact, and wear that flooring requires.

For floor applications, we recommend sourcing tile specifically designed and rated for that purpose. Always consult with your installer before making a final decision.

Are your tiles suitable for commercial projects?

Yes, our vintage tiles can be used in commercial projects. However, because each collection is limited in quantity, availability may not meet the scale of larger installations.

We recommend reaching out to discuss your project needs, and we’re happy to help determine if a particular tile is a good fit.

Are coordinating trim pieces available?

Some products include coordinating trim pieces such as bullnose, edge trim, or decorative accents, but availability varies. When coordinating pieces are available, they will typically be noted in the product listing.

Because each brand and era of tile is unique, matching products are not always guaranteed.

If you have questions about how different tiles or trim pieces may work together, we’re happy to provide additional photos and help you find the best options.

Do you offer other vintage materials for kitchen or bathroom projects?

Yes, in addition to vintage tile, Vintage Tile Shop offers a curated selection of vintage plumbing fixtures, including sinks, tubs, and toilets in classic colorways.

For other elements of your project, we also recommend visiting our Vintage Tile Resources page (coming soon!), where we share trusted sources for materials and specialists who work with vintage and restoration-focused spaces.

Planning Your Order

How much tile do I need?

The amount of tile needed will depend on the size of your space and the layout of your project.

As a general guideline, measure the width and height of the area you plan to tile to calculate the total square footage needed. We recommend accounting for an additional 10% to cover cuts and breakage.

Because vintage tile is extremely limited and often one-of-a-kind, we also suggest purchasing extra beyond that amount for future repairs or additions, as the same tile may not be available later.

Please note that Vintage Tile Shop tiles are sold by the box, not by exact square footage, so final quantities will depend on available inventory and packaging.

If you need help estimating quantities, feel free to contact us.

Can I order more tile later if I need it?

Because our inventory is vintage and limited, we cannot guarantee that additional quantities will be available later. We recommend purchasing enough tile for your full project, including extra for future repairs or additions.

Do you offer tile samples?

Due to the limited and often one-of-a-kind nature of our inventory, we do not typically offer samples.

We do our best to provide detailed photos and descriptions so you can make an informed decision. If you have specific questions about a tile, feel free to reach out—we’re happy to help.

Local pickup may be arranged by appointment. Please contact us to coordinate.

For large orders in the New York City area, delivery options may be available upon request.

What is your return policy?

We accept returns within 30 days of delivery.

Items must be unused, in their original condition, and in original packaging to be eligible for return. A 30% restocking fee applies, and original shipping costs are non-refundable.

Are the tiles tested for modern use / health standards?
