Jack J. Hartert was born in New York to art dealer father Joseph Hartert. After serving in the Pacific theater during WWII, he moved to Paris to study art and later moved to England in 1961 where he lived until his death in 1975. A talented painter, Hartert exhibited in the U.S., France and the UK. He is however probably best known as the author of a group of forged paintings sold by his father to luminaries such as Walter P. Chrysler and others.
